Found Faithful
Words are funny things.
Consider 1 Corinthians 4:2 which states, "Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful." Notice that Paul doesn’t say that it is “suggested that stewards be found faithful”; or that it is “desired that stewards be found faithful”; or that it is “hoped that stewards be found faithful”; but REQUIRED. “Required” is a strong word.
Did you also notice that the stewards are not required to be found “fruitful,” or “prayerful,” or “sincere” (although those are part of it), but FAITHFUL. The defining sign of a steward is not success or fame or numbers or lack of failure but to be found FAITHFUL. I think I like the word “faithful.” I don’t know about you, but it is easy for me to get my eyes off of the word “faithful” and pragmatically replace it with the word “successful.” When my goal is to be full of “success” versus “faith” I can get myself in trouble.
To get at the heart of this text it wouldn’t hurt us to think through the words “steward” and “found” as well.
This is what drives us… to one day hear “well done good and FAITHFUL servant.” To be found faithful propels us, energizes us, and provides the perseverance when we are battle-weary and empty.
Words are funny things, but it is important that we get them right. Reading them wrong can lead to all kinds of red warning lights on the ministry dashboard.
This year at District Conference we want to have fun, build relationships, complete our business, be equipped, worship, pray, and focus on stewardship.
It is our goal that when you drive away on Thursday, April 16th at noon, whether you are just getting into ministry or getting ready to get out; whether you are from a micro-church or a mega-church; whether you are full-time or bi-vocational; whether you are solo or part of a team, that you will have encountered Christ and community and be re-aligned to be Found Faithful.
